Virgin Media has resolved an issue that left many customers unable to access the internet. The telecoms giant acknowledged on Monday that there were "intermittent issues" with its services and issued an apology to affected customers, assuring them that solving the problem was a top priority. The exact cause of the issue has not been confirmed by the company.

According to the service status website Downdetector, more than 9,000 reports of problems were received since 11am, with most users reporting disruptions to their internet services. Virgin Media O2 spokesperson stated, "We’re aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues with their services. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this as a priority."

Later on Monday, a Virgin Media spokesperson announced that all services had been fully restored following an earlier outage. The company expressed its regret for any inconvenience caused to impacted customers. Many affected individuals also took to social media to share their service issues, with one user describing their connection as "all over the place" and another questioning why the problem occurred on a Monday.

One user raised concerns about reimbursement for the mobile data they had to use to access the internet during the service disruption. They stated, "I hope you’re going to reimburse me for my data I have used today, being with O2 data and having my own Virgin Media broadband down I am using all of my data that I have left… not helpful."

Virgin Media merged with O2 UK in June 2021, creating a £31bn company as US media firm Liberty Global, the owner of Virgin Media cable TV and broadband provider, joined forces with Spanish firm Telefonica. At the end of the second quarter in 2024, Virgin Media reported having 5.7 million broadband customers, many of whom also utilize the company’s mobile and pay-television services.
