Brian James, founding member of The Damned, has passed away at the age of 70. The guitarist, a key part of the group’s original lineup, was responsible for writing the iconic UK punk single «New Rose» and played a pivotal role in the creation of their debut album, «Damned Damned Damned,» released in 1977.

A spokesperson for the record label Easy Action confirmed the news, stating, «I can confirm that Brian passed away peacefully yesterday with his family present.»

James’ bandmate, bassist Raymond «Captain Sensible» Burns, paid tribute to him in an Instagram post, describing him as a «riffmeister» and celebrating his remarkable life. Despite any challenges they may have faced, Burns highlighted James’ kindness and shared fond memories of their time together.

In a statement on James’ Facebook page, he was hailed as a true pioneer of music, a talented guitarist, songwriter, and a gentleman. The statement mentioned his wife, son, and daughter-in-law being by his side when he peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

The Damned, known for supporting the Sex Pistols on their Anarchy Tour in the UK, also had the opportunity to perform with T Rex on Marc Bolan’s final tour. After leaving the band following the release of their second album, James went on to be part of Tanz Der Youth before forming The Lords Of The New Church with Stiv Bators and Nick Turner.

Throughout his career, James remained creatively active, releasing music with bands like The Dripping Lips and his own group, the Brian James Gang, in addition to solo projects. In 2020, he reunited with The Damned’s lead singer, Dave Vanian, drummer Christopher «Rat Scabies» Millar, and Burns to reform the band after more than four decades since its inception in 1976.

The band’s performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday was dedicated to James, recognizing his indispensable contribution to The Damned’s legacy. Burns expressed regret that they would never have the opportunity to reunite again but reflected on the magic of their original shows and the joy of recreating their signature sound from the ’76 era. The band paid tribute to James, acknowledging that without him, The Damned would never have come to fruition.
