A young driver has confessed to causing the deaths of three passengers after a fatal car crash on his way home from school.

Edward Spencer, now 19 years old, had recently obtained his driver’s license only five weeks prior to the tragic accident that occurred between Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire and Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire in April 2023.

The three passengers in his car – Harry Purcell, 17, Tilly Seccombe, 16, and Frank Wormald, 16 – lost their lives due to the injuries sustained during the collision.

All four individuals were students in the sixth form at Chipping Campden School.

Additionally, a woman and two young children in the other vehicle involved in the crash suffered severe injuries and are currently undergoing treatment for their life-altering wounds.

Spencer, a resident of Newbold on Stour in Warwickshire, pleaded guilty to three charges of causing death by careless driving and three charges of causing serious injury by careless driving at Warwick Crown Court on Monday.

He has been granted bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on 28 April.

According to Warwickshire Police, Spencer, who was 17 years old at the time of the accident, lost control of his Ford Fiesta on the B4035 Campden Road.

Following the court hearing on Monday, Inspector Michael Huntley emphasized the importance for young drivers and their parents to recognize the limitations of being a newly licensed driver.

«Drivers must understand the catastrophic consequences that can result from careless driving,» he stated.

«Edward Spencer had only recently passed his driving test, and his negligent actions led to the tragic loss of three young lives in his vehicle.»

He further remarked, «This tragic incident has devastated numerous lives. The pain it has caused is unimaginable, and our thoughts are with those individuals and families affected.»

«Edward Spencer will have to live with the repercussions of his actions for the rest of his life, just as the families of all those involved will.»
