The disgraced former chair of the Co-op Bank, Paul Flowers, has been sentenced to three years in jail for fraud. The 74-year-old, who was removed from his position in 2013 amid allegations of misconduct and drug abuse, pleaded guilty to 18 counts of fraud totaling almost £100,000. Flowers, a former Methodist minister, committed these crimes against an elderly and vulnerable friend while serving as the executor of her will.
Manchester Crown Court heard that Flowers took advantage of Margaret Jarvis’s trust in him due to his prominent public roles. He misused her funds for personal expenses, including drugs, vacations, and gifts, after she developed dementia. Even after Jarvis passed away in 2016, Flowers continued to deplete her estate.
Flowers had previously faced scrutiny for his oversight of the Co-op Bank, which required a rescue by US hedge funds in 2017. As a result, he was later banned from the financial services industry. Additionally, Flowers was fined £400 in 2014 for drug possession, earning him the nickname «the Crystal Methodist» in the media. He failed to appear at a previous sentencing hearing for the fraud charges but turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
During sentencing, Judge Nicholas Dean KC described Flowers’s actions as a betrayal of trust towards a vulnerable friend. Detective Constable Kate Riley from Greater Manchester Police emphasized that Flowers’s fraudulent behavior deprived charitable causes of much-needed funds. She highlighted the importance of holding Flowers accountable for his actions and ensuring that justice was served.
