An investigation has been initiated after the tragic death of a man following his arrest by Border Force officers at Manchester Airport. The 27-year-old man was detained for exhibiting unusual behavior at the airport, where he was scheduled to travel on Wednesday, as reported by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC stated that the man was arrested by officers and taken to a holding area after becoming unwell, prompting a call for paramedics. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 1.53pm. Upon notification of the man’s passing, an independent investigation was promptly launched at 4.29pm on Wednesday.
The investigation was instigated on the same afternoon following a referral by the Home Office to the IOPC. Investigators were dispatched to the scene to commence the collection of evidence.
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe expressed, "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected by his death. When someone passes away after being taken into custody, it is imperative to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the events leading to the tragedy. We have reached out to the man’s family to elucidate our role and will provide them with updates as the investigation progresses. Our investigation is still in its nascent stages, and no further information is available at this point."
