The former Archbishop of Canterbury expressed feeling «overwhelmed» by the numerous child abuse allegations that crossed his desk during his tenure, admitting to making mistakes in handling them. Justin Welby resigned in November following a review that revealed his failure to adequately address reports regarding serial abuser John Smyth’s activities within the Church of England.

Dr. Welby disclosed to the BBC his astonishment at the extent of the child abuse issue within the Church, stating that he was inundated with unresolved cases daily. He acknowledged knowing Smyth and described the weeks following the revelations as «absolutely overwhelming.» Despite attempting to prioritize the cases, he admitted to making errors and took full responsibility as Archbishop.

The Archbishop’s resignation was prompted by an independent review uncovering Smyth’s extensive abuse, indicating that formal reporting to the police in 2013 by Welby could have facilitated justice. Smyth, considered the most prolific serial abuser linked to the Church, allegedly victimized up to 130 individuals in the UK and Africa through physical, sexual, psychological, and spiritual assaults at summer camps.

Allegations against Smyth date back to 1982, and the Makin review confirmed the Church of England’s cover-up of his abuses over the years. Despite a victim coming forward in 2013, no action was taken at the highest levels of the Church, allowing Smyth to relocate to Africa where he continued his abusive behavior.

Following Smyth’s death in 2018 while under investigation by Hampshire Police, Dr. Welby eventually acknowledged his handling of the abuse allegations, taking personal and institutional responsibility. The former Archbishop initially resisted calls to resign but later recognized the need to be accountable for his actions.
