The bomb squad conducted a controlled burn of explosive chemicals discovered at a seafront residence in Sussex.
Following the discovery of explosives and 500 canisters containing additional unknown chemicals at a property in St Leonards, near Hastings, a major incident was declared, resulting in the evacuation of 73 individuals from their homes.
The 500 additional canisters are believed to be non-explosive, but they will undergo testing by specialists.
As a consequence of the situation, the Hastings Half Marathon, scheduled for Sunday morning, had to be called off.
A 100m cordon was established, and the timeline for residents to return home remains uncertain.
Organizers of the race announced on Saturday night that due to the lack of clarity on when the cordon would be lifted or when they could access the course, the event had to be cancelled.
A 28-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of producing illegal substances and manufacturing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.
He is currently under detainment pursuant to the Mental Health Act while investigations are ongoing.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police stated that «significant progress» had been achieved in securing the chemicals.
«The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team successfully removed the desensitized chemicals from the property and conducted a controlled burn in a skip near the sea wall on Saturday morning.
«EOD continues to conduct searches this morning to identify any other hazardous materials in the residence, ensuring the area is clear of explosive substances.»
