An ancient oak tree believed to be over 400 years old was recently felled in a tragic incident that has left many in north London saddened. The tree’s massive trunk and severed branches were found by council workers on April 3rd in Whitewebbs Park, Enfield.

Adam Cormack, the head of campaigning at the Woodland Trust, expressed his dismay at the event, calling it a «depressing crime» that serves as a stark reminder that not all ancient trees are safe from harm. He noted the rarity of such a large and old oak tree being cut down, emphasizing its significance in London’s ecosystem.

The authorities have taken action by reporting the incident to the Metropolitan Police and implementing an emergency preservation order for the tree stump. Ergin Erbil, the leader of Enfield Council, condemned the act as criminal damage and assured that measures are being taken to protect and potentially revive the tree.

In response to this incident and the previous felling of the Sycamore Gap tree, the Tree Council and Forest Research have called for a more robust system to safeguard England’s most important trees.

A trial involving two individuals charged in connection with the tree felling is scheduled to take place at Newcastle Crown Court later this month. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to promote awareness and conservation of other trees in the area.

Oak trees play a crucial role in supporting UK wildlife and sequestering carbon, making them invaluable to the environment. The loss of such a significant tree serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our natural heritage.
